Ryan School murder: Teen accused to be tried as adult

The Juvenile Justice Board on Wednesday ruled that the teenager accused of killing a seven-year-old boy at the Ryan International School in Gurugram would be tried as an adult.

The 16-year-old boy, a class-11 student of the same school, allegedly killed Pradhyuman Thakur, a class-two student, in September to force the school to postpone examinations. The Haryana Police had initially arrested a school bus conductor in connection with the case. The teenager was detained after the CBI took over investigation of the case.

Making its decision, the JJB observed that the crime was 'heinous' in nature and that the accused was 'mature enough' to understand the consequences of his actions. The ruling means that the accused can be tried in a sessions court for the crime; his family have announced that they will appeal the ruling.

Earlier this month, the JJB had rejected a bail application from the accused after receiving expert reports that he was 'aggressive' in nature.
