Fresh violence has broken out in Manipur after a woman was shot dead during a protest in Chassad village in Kamjong district on Friday night.
The deceased was identified as Domkhonei Touthang, a Kuki civilian and a mother of five. She was reportedly participating in a protest against the alleged arrest and detention of village volunteers when the incident occurred at around 9: 35 pm. She was reportedly shot in the neck by an officer in the Indian Reserve Battalion.
She reportedly succumbed to her injuries at around 9:40 pm.
According to Kuki civil bodies, the incident took place after a group of women protested the alleged arrest and detention of Chassad village volunteers.
The Kuki Human Rights Forum KHRF claimed that Touthang was shot while participating in the protest.
The KHRF condemned the killing and demanded a time-bound independent judicial inquiry and arrest of the personnel involved. They also demanded the release of the detained youths.
There were also reports of houses belonging to Tangkhul Naga villagers being set ablaze by unidentified miscreants during October 9 and 10. Naga villagers alleged that the arson was committed by the Chassad villagers after the death of the woman.
The district administration imposed a prohibitory restriction within a 400-meter radius of the Chassad police gate junction.
