RSS Sarsanghchalak Mohan Bhagwat, on Tuesday, came up with an inclusive, broad definition of what it means to be a Hindu.

Interacting with noted persons in Guwahati, the Sarsanghchalak claimed that 'Hindu' is not just a religious term but a civilisational identity which is rooted in thousands of years of cultural continuity.

"Bharat and Hindu are synonymous. India does not need an official declaration to be a 'Hindu rashtra'. Its civilisational ethos already reflects it," he asserted.

He further stated that RSS was not created to oppose or harm anyone but to focus on character-building and contribute to making India a global leader.

His statement on RSS assumes significance as the Congress has been training its guns on the Sangh recently, accusing it of engaging "one of Pakistan's official lobbying arms" to espouse its interests in the US, and claimed that this is not the first time that the Sangh has "betrayed national interest".

The RSS chief also addressed concerns about "demographic changes" in Assam, and called for confidence, vigilance, and firm attachment to one's land and identity.

Describing the Northeast as a shining example of India's unity in diversity, he said that figures like Lachit Borphukan and Srimanta Shankardeva hold not just regional importance but national relevance and inspire all Indians.

Bhagwat urged all sections of society to work collectively and selflessly for nation-building.
