The Madurai bench of Madras High Court will hear a plea moved by Tamilaga Vettri Vazhagam (TVK) and its leader Vijay over the tragic stampede in Karur. The newly launched political party has sought a probe by a central agency or an independent probe into the incident.
A group of lawyers led by the party's advocates' wing president, S. Arivazhagan, went to the residence of Justice M. Dhandapani and urged him to consider the party's plea urgently. Though on puja holidays, the High Court will take up the plea on Monday.
In the plea, the party alleged conspiracy behind the deadly mishap and demanded an independent probe. The petitioners urged the Court to take suo motu cognisance of the case and order a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) or by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) into the tragic stampede.
As many as 40 people died in a tragic stampede at Velusamypuram in Karur on Saturday. The deceased include 10 children and 16 women. The death toll, according to sources, is feared to increase as 58 more people are still getting treated at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at the Karur Medical College Hospital.

According to TVK party functionary Nirmal Kumar, the judge asked the advocates to file a petition before the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court and it will be taken up for hearing on Monday at 2.15pm.
Meanwhile, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam-led state government has ordered a judicial probe into the matter. The state government has formed a single-judge commission and appointed former Madras High Court judge Aruna Jagadeesan to conduct a probe into the matter.
