Justice Manindra Mohan Shrivastava (also known as M.M. Shrivastava) has been sworn in as the Chief Justice of the Madras High Court. His tenure will end on March 6, 2026.

The oath of office was administered to him by Tamil Nadu Governor R.N. Ravi at the Raj Bhavan on Monday, after Chief Secretary N. Muruganandam read out the presidential warrant of appointment.

The Centre had notified the transfer of Justice M.M. Shrivastava on July 14 from the Rajasthan High Court to the Madras High Court. The shuffle was recommended by the Union Government nearly two months after the collegium recommended the transfer of outgoing Chief Justice K.R. Shriram.

Born in Bilaspur on March 6, 1964, he enrolled with the Bar Council of Madhya Pradesh on October 1987.

He shifted to the Chhattisgarh High Court after the state of Chhattisgarh was carved out of Madhya Pradesh in the year 2000. Shrivastava was later elevated as a Judge at the Chhattisgarh High Court in 2009.

As an advocate who practised at the Raigarh district court, Madhya Pradesh High Court and the Chhattisgarh High Court, he was designated as a senior advocate in January 2025.

During his 14-year long tenure as a High Court judge in Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan, Shrivastava has authored more than 505 judgements, with expertise spanning constitutional, service, taxation, labour, civil, and criminal law.

Though the transfer seems to be routine as per the recommendations made by the collegium, several political and high-profile cases involving DMK ministers—which are currently pending in the Madras High Court and also the Enforcement Directorate—makes it interesting. Incidentally, these political cases could even play a role in the upcoming general elections of 2026.

Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin, top government officials, Tamil Nadu Assembly Speaker M Appavu, and various other ministers including including Duraimurugan, K.N. Nehru, E.V. Velu and AIADMK leaders D. Jayakumar and C.V. Shanmugam presented were seen at the ceremony, presenting a bouquet and shawl to Justice Shrivastava, a PTI report said.
