A consumer forum in Lucknow has issued a notice to Elon Musk’s xAI (formerly Twitter) for indulging in unfair trade practices based on a complaint by an activist-politician.
Amitabh Thakur, a former IPS officer who now heads a political outfit, approached the forum to complain that the services promised by the platform, against payment, were not made available. In his complaint, he stated that he first purchased basic services which were to allow reply boost, edit post, download videos, longer posts and background video playback. He has complained that there was not the slightest boost in replies, the edit option went missing after a couple of days, and that only 280 characters of his longer posts were visible. Thakur then tried to upgrade to ‘Premium’ only to repeatedly get the message ‘Something went wrong. Please try again’.
He has said that internet search has revealed that many users are facing this problem hence it seems ‘deliberate and intentional’ on the company’s part. He has also said that asking for money first to provide blue tick premium account on X and then verifying the account is completely wrong. He said that X should do the verification before receiving the money for providing a premium account to a person, not after taking the money.

X has also not clarified whether if a person is found ineligible for verification, his money will be returned with interest or without interest. Also, customers face a lot of problems while trying to upgrade from one scheme to another. It is said that it can be on the same platform on which the earlier account had been created, but often, the upgrade is not done on the earlier account and more money has to be paid on the other platform.
Thakur has called these unfair trade practices under the Consumer Protection Act and has demanded an end to them. He has also demanded ₹10,000 as compensation. The Consumer Forum has issued a notice to X Corp and asked it to respond.
