Greater Noida class 10 girl dies by suicide after school suspects use of AI in exam; family alleges harassment

A 16-year-old class 10 student in Greater Noida died by suicide following accusations of using AI during a pre-board exam. Her family has filed an FIR against the school for alleged mental harassment and abetment to suicide

A class 10 girl died by suicide just hours after she was questioned by her teachers and the principal over suspected use of AI during her pre-board examination, police said on Saturday.

The incident occurred on December 23 in Greater Noida West, Uttar Pradesh.

According to the student’s father's complaint to the police, he has three daughters who all study at the same school. He alleged that his eldest daughter had carried her mobile phone to school “unknowingly.”

She was caught by the invigilator, who reprimanded her and informed her class teacher. She was then taken to the principal.

The students' parents were called to the school. Her father alleged that the teachers and the principal continued to insult the student aggressively and that she was called “careless” by the teacher.

The girl's father submitted a complaint ot tthe polcie on Thursday seeking an FIR be filed against the school's management for alleged abetment to suicide and mental harassment. He named the class teacher Poonam Dubey and another teacher Taapas, and the school management in his complaint. The 16-year-old had jumped from her eighth-floor flat early that day. Her father alleged that she was deeply distressed after being scolded by her teachers on December 22.

The principal who spoke to The Times of India said that the student was reprimanded strictly in line with CBSE rules and was not harassed. They also told the student that cheating in the board exam could earn him a five-year suspension from writing the test. The principal said that the interaction was brief and non-abusive. “That is the rule, and the child was only told about the consequences,” she said. The principal also said that the parents were informed immediately and reached the school within 10 to 15 minutes.

Police are verifying statements from the family, school authorities, and the witnesses and reviewing available evidence, including CCTV footage, as part of the investigation.
