Trinamool Congress MP Nusrat Jahan, who has been under fire for her alleged silence on the violence and protests in Sandeshkhali—which falls in her parliament constituency of Basirhat—said on Sunday that she had always followed her party’s guidelines and served the people.

“It is heart wrenching waking up to such allegations. As a woman, as a public representative I have always followed my party’s guidelines and served the people,” she said in a post on X.

Sharing a cutout of a newspaper report that quoted Sandeshkhali residents as saying that the MP had forgotten them, Jahan said Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was taking all necessary steps to ensure the welfare of the people in the island that has been on the boil for more than a month.

“We are not above the law.. thus abiding by it and supporting the administration is what one needs to do. I have genuinely served the people in my constituency, in times of joy, in times of trouble.. I act in accordance with the guidelines of my party.. and I believe we must have faith in the state government and administration; what is wrong shall always be condemned,” she said in the post.

“People’s security and welfare is our top priority.. Rest who says what about whom does not matter. Like I said before.. I’d repeat again “STOP POLITICISING”,” Jahan further said.

Last week, as tension simmers in her constituency, Jahan was seen posting reels on Instagram, celebrating the Valentine’s Day with her husband and actor Yash Gupta, prompting the BJP and other opposition parties to question her priorities.

Sandeshkhali grabbed national headlines after several women took to streets earlier this month, accusing Trinamool leader Shahjahan Sheikh and his supporters of illegally grabbing their land and sexually abusing them.

Sheikh has been absconding since January 15 when a team of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials, who had reached in Sandeshkhali to raid the premises of the TMC leader in connection with a ration scam, were attacked and chased away by a mob affiliated to him.
