Eight Goa Cong MLAs to join BJP, says state party chief Tanavade

With two-thirds switching party, MLAs may defy action under anti-defection law

Eight Congress MLAs from Goa are set to join the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, state BJP chief Sadanand Shet Tanavade told PTI on Wednesday.

In the 40-member Goa Assembly, the Congress has 11 legislators and the BJP has 20. In a similar move in July 2019, 10 Congress MLAs had switched over to the BJP.

The Congress leglislators led by senior leaders Digambar Kamat and Michael Lobo met Chief Minister Pramod Sawant and Vidhan Sabha Speaker, NDTV reported. According to reports, with two thirds of party MLAs switching to BJP, they may be able to disqualification action under the anti-defection law.

According to reports, the Goa Congress Legislature Party on Wednesday passed a resolution to merge into the Bharatiya Janata Party. Leader of Opposition Michael Lobo moved the resolution in the presence of seven other MLAs. The resolution was seconded by former chief minister and MLA Digambar Kamat, sources said.

In the picture, MLAs Michael Lobo along with Digambar Kamat, Delilah Lobo, Rajesh Phaldesai, Kedar Naik, Sankalp Amonkar, Aleixo Sequeira and Rudolf Fernandes were seen interacting with the chief minister.
