A 21-year-old migrant worker from West Bengal was lynched to death in Sambalpur in Odisha after being mistaken for a Bangladeshi. The migrant worker, Jewel Sheikh, who is from Chakbahadurpur in Murshidabad district, had gone to Odisha three years ago in search of work.

He was injured after being beaten up by local miscreants and succumbed to his injuries. His family is inconsolable and has demanded that an investigation be conducted. “My son had eaten dinner, and after that, he was hit on the head by goons. He fell unconscious and died on the way to the hospital,” said his mother, Najima Biwi.

“Perpetrators of the crime should be brought to book. I am seeking help,” added his mother.

“Last night, after making and eating dinner, he was in his room with others when 5–6 people beat them up and killed him. Two others are admitted to the hospital. I appeal to the authorities to arrest the culprits,” said his uncle, Anwar Sheikh.

The Trinamool Congress (TMC) reacted sharply to the incident, while attacking the BJP.

“Six people have been arrested already. Action will be taken against them. We are standing by the family. We are making arrangements for the body to be brought to his house after the post-mortem,” said TMC MLA Emami Biswas.

Migrant workers present with Jewel were also allegedly beaten up and are being treated in the hospital.
