The Communist Party of India (CPI) expressed grave concern over the prevailing situation in Jammu and Kashmir during its 15th state conference held in Srinagar.

Former Rajya Sabha member, comrade Aziz Pasha and comrade Annie Raja, National Executive member CPI and general secretary National Federation of Indian Women attended the conference held on August 21.

During the conference, the party expressed grave concern over the prevailing situation in Jammu and Kashmir. In a statement, the CPI said the growing number of militancy-related incidents in the Valley lays bare the normalcy claim of the BJP government led by Narendra Modi.

It said such incidents hark back to the troubled nineties when militancy was at its peak in the region. “The spurt in the targeted killings of the members of Kashmiri Pandit community reflects the government's utter failure to provide protection to the minority community in the Valley,’’ it said.

“In absence of a representative government, the people in Jammu and Kashmir are further pushed to the wall and the bureaucratic rule of the last more than four years has only compounded their problems."

It said by getting a whiff of defeat, the government is continuously avoiding the assembly elections in the region and is seriously mulling over giving vote rights to the outsiders to ensure its win in the upcoming elections.

It said in the recent statement of the Chief Election Officer that giving vote rights to 25 lakh new voters, who ordinarily reside in the region is an attempt towards this direction. “The government is making every effort to manoeuvre the situation to its advantage by effecting sweeping changes to the electoral demography of J&K,’’ it said.

It said the present government has chosen to shut its eyes to the growing unemployment in the region and the graph of unemployment has shot up manifolds since the J&K's special status was withdrawn.

It said the scrapping of the recruitment process for the posts of police sub-inspector following the reports of corruption has disappointed thousands of job seekers.

The conference stressed that corruption in the region has reached levels never seen before. In its 15th conference, the CPI also elected a state council with 15 members and a new state and assistant secretaries.

G. M. Mizrab was elected as the state secretary. Two assistant secretaries including senior party leader Des Raj Manhas were also elected.

During the conference, the party also passed a resolution demanding the rollback of the decision taken on August 5, 2019, restoration of statehood, giving autonomy to the Panchayats and holding the elections without any further delay.
