Murmu files nomination for Presidential election

If elected, she would be the first person from tribal community to hold the post

Droupadi Murmu, NDA's candidate for the presidential election filed her nomination papers at the Parliament on Friday.

Murmu was accompanied by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union ministers Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh and Nitin Gadkari, chief ministers of various NDA ruled states and leaders of parties in the alliance. The 64-year-old from Odisha and has earlier served as minister in Odisha government and governor of Jharkhand. Murmu filed her papers before Returning Officer P C Mody.

The presidential election would be held on July 18 to elect a successor to incumbent Ram Nath Kovind and the counting of votes would be on July 21.

Meanwhile, West Bengal CM Mamata Bannerjee accused that the BJP is trying to topple Maharashtra government for it to have sufficient number of votes in the President elections. Bannerjee alleged, “It is attempting to topple the Maharashtra government in an unethical and unconstitutional manner. In the forthcoming presidential polls, the BJP is falling short in terms of votes. Hence, they are picking and choosing which government to topple to get the votes needed to elect their nominee for the post of president.”
