Kerala collected Rs 46,546.13 crore in liquor tax in last 5 years

Highest tax is 247 per cent for foreign liquor made in India

Kerala government, in the last five years, has collected Rs 46,546.13 crores in liquor tax. Every day the state collected Rs 25.53 crore in liquor tax and Rs 766 crores each month. The highest amount of liquor tax was collected in 2019-20—Rs.10,332.39 crores.

The highest liquor tax is 247 per cent for foreign liquor made in India and 237 per cent for foreign liquor made in India. Between 2016 and 2021, about 42,23,86,768.35 litres of beer was consumed and about 55,57,065.53 litres of wine. As per a report by the National Family Health Survey, Alappuzha district in the state tops in alcohol consumption followed by Kottayam district. As per the survey report, 18.7 per cent of men in rural areas and 21 per cent of men in cities consume alcohol in Kerala. Mallapuram district has the lowest liquor consumption numbers—only 7.7 per cent of men consume alcohol.

As per a Dec 27 report, Kerala, on Christmas, consumed a record of alcohol worth Rs 215 crores. On Christmas day the Power House Outlet in the state capital, Thiruvananthapuram, sold liquor worth Rs 73, the highest in the state.
