The college student who murdered his classmate on the campus of St Thomas College in Kerala's Kottayam district told the police that he did not intend to kill her.

According to media reports, the accused, 21-year-old Abhishek Baiju, said said he was in a relationship with the victim, Nithina, and was upset after she ended the affair.

The accused killed the girl by slitting her throat with a knife. Although she was rushed to hospital, she succumbed to the injuries. Abhishek was arrested later.

The security guard of the college said he witnessed the murder from afar.

He said he saw the victim and the accused quarreling for some time before Abhishek attacked the girl with a knife. "From a distance, I saw them quarreling. After a short while, the man pushed the girl and dragged her by her neck. Then I saw blood splatter. The man then wiped his hands and sat calmly on a chair. Even when the girl was rushed to the hospital, he sat there emotionless," the security guard said.

Abhishek's father Baiju told reporters that the accused had not given any indication of emotional stress when he left for the college in the morning.

Baiju said he was aware of his son's affair and had tried to dissuade him. "I had my suspicions (about the relationship). I had told him to focus on his studies instead," he said.
