The second COVID-19 wave is raging across the country, with a record 2,624 deaths in a day, according to data on Saturday morning. The national capital has been struggling with shortage of medical oxygen and hospital beds to accommodate COVID-19 patients.
Resident doctors and students of AIIMS are mourning the sudden demise of Rahmat Ahsan, fondly known as ‘Rahmat uncle’, who ran a general store for over 20 years inside the AIIMS hospital campus.
Rahmat, 49, had developed fever over the last few days and an antigen test showed he was positive for COVID-19, the Indian Express reported. He tried to get a bed at AIIMS, but failed to do so. He passed away on Thursday.
Speaking to the Indian Express, resident doctors recalled how he kept his store open throughout the day when the pandemic struck last year, and told them he was with them in their fight against the virus.

On Twitter too, resident doctors are sharing messages of condolence. A user also shared the link to a fund-raising campaign organised by the AIIMS students’ association, to raise funds for family members of Rahmat ‘who served COVID warriors in times of crisis.’
AIIMS SU raising funds for Rahmat Uncle. He served COVID warriors during time of crisis but couldn’t get bed for himself. Govt won’t consider him Covid Warrior & neither gives him compensation. Now it’s our responsibility to donate & help the bereaved family #RIP pic.twitter.com/fW0BxWnvaA
