Prime Minister Narendra Modi has arrived in Kyrgyzstan to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit and hold a series of bilateral meetings on the sidelines.
Modi was received at the airport on Sunday evening by Adylbek Kasymaliev, Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers of Kyrgyzstan.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said that the SCO summit will bring together representatives of its 10 member states, 15 partner countries and two observer nations to discuss a range of regional and global issues.
The SCO was founded in 2001 by China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. India and Pakistan became full members in 2017, followed by Iran in 2023 and Belarus in 2024.
Modi is expected to hold bilateral meetings with several SCO leaders, including Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov and Russian President Vladimir Putin, on the sidelines of the summit.
Last week, the MEA said Modi and Putin would review the entire gamut of bilateral relations during their meeting in Bishkek.
The meeting would be the first between Modi and Putin since the war in the Middle East began earlier this year, sending global oil markets into turmoil. The two leaders last met in December 2025, when Putin visited New Delhi for the 23rd India-Russia Annual Summit.
Modi’s meeting with Putin comes days after External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met the Russian President at the Kremlin during his two-day official visit to Russia.
Chinese President Xi Jinping has also arrived in Bishkek for the SCO summit. It was not immediately clear whether a bilateral meeting between Modi and Xi had been scheduled.
Xi is widely expected to attend the BRICS summit in New Delhi on September 12-13 before travelling to the United States for a summit meeting with President Donald Trump.
