Since Wednesday, numerous incidents were reported of police in Haryana and Delhi using water cannons and teargas against marching farmers.

The son of a farmer became a hero for climbing atop a police vehicle equipped with a water cannon in Ambala Cantt on National Highway 44 on Wednesday.

Navdeep Singh (26) is the son of a farm agitation leader, Jai Singh. A video clip of Navdeep jumping onto the police vehicle to turn off the water cannon went viral.

The incident happened near the grain market in Mohra village on National Highway 44 as police sought to block the road with barricades to stop farmers from Ambala, Panchkula and Yamunanagar from marching to Delhi.

However, news emerged on Friday that Navdeep had been booked by Haryana Police on charges of attempt to murder, rioting and violation of COVID-19 norms.

Navdeep told reporters that policemen had hit him on his legs while he was jumping off the water cannon carrier. He, however, added he harboured no ill will against the police.
