Unprecedented rains have caused havoc in the coastal Karnataka region. At least 105 villages in Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts have been affected by floods after heavy rains began lashing the coastal Karnataka and Malnad regions since Saturday night.

The Indian Meteorological Department has sounded a red alert across all three coastal districts (including Uttara Kannada) and Malnad areas including Chikkamagaluru, Shimoga, Hassan and Kodagu districts till Tuesday morning.

The NDRF teams from Mangaluru and Mysuru have been rushed to the flood-affected areas.

The temple town of Udupi has suffered inundation owing to the swelling of river Indrani, while the neighbouring Mulki Hobli too saw flooding after incessant rains lashed the region, causing river Shambavi to overflow.

As many as 4,124 people have been evacuated to safer places, while 1,250 people have sought refuge across 36 relief centres set up by the state government on Sunday.

Bhagamandala in Kodagu has been once again inundated in the heavy downpour.

Landslides have disrupted the connectivity along the highways in Malnad region.

"As per the preliminary assessment, at least 77 villages in Udupi and 28 villages in Dakshina Kannada have been affected. The district administration has reported that 1,126 houses have been partially damaged and 13 houses fully damaged in the deluge, even as the extent of crop losses is yet to be ascertained," said Revenue Minister R. Ashok.
