The Galle stadium witnessed a rainy opening day to India's 600th test match, which also saw the unfortunate run-out of Yashasvi Jaiswal for 32. While breaking for lunch, India reached 101 with KL Rahul batting on 32 and Devdutt Padikkal on 35 on the other end.
The second-wicket partnership of Rahul and Devdutt so far hit 54 runs off 16 overs, recovering from the fall of the first wicket.
Jaiswal was also looking good with a 37-ball 32, before losing balance after colliding with the bowler, eventually leading to a confusion that saw both batters land at the non-striker's end.
The recovery was much swifter, though, at four an over, especially after Rahul found his rhythm after a few dangerously close-to-dismissal balls from pacer Lahiru Kumara.
Sri Lanka also brought left-arm spinner Prabath Jayasuriya to control the flow of runs, but the Indian batters had already found their footing then, with Rahul hitting him off the park and Devdutt closing the deal with a boundary.
The post-lunch session, however, was delayed after the lunch-break rains led to a wet outfield. The ground staff had to cover the field during the break. India is expected to keep the rhythm after play resumes.
