At least five persons went missing on Thursday morning after their house was washed away in a massive landslide that occurred in the foothills of Brahmagiri near Talacauvery—the origin of river Cauvery in Kodagu district.

According to the district administration officials, Narayana Achar, the chief priest of Talacauvery, his wife, elder brother and three others are missing as their house was washed away on Wednesday night. Fortunately, the junior priest, Prashant Achar, and his family are safe as they had shifted to safety after the panchayat development officer and deputy superintendent of police had requested them to vacate their house.

The NDRF teams have been rushed to the site for rescue and relief operations, even as heavy rains continue to lash the district.

District in-charge minister V. Somanna said, "The administration had alerted the family and given them evacuation notice to relocate to a safer place. While the junior priest's family had shifted out to Bhagamandala, the chief priest had refused to relocate. The family has now gone missing as both the houses have been washed away in the landslide. The rescue operations are on."

"The NDRF teams are finding it difficult to launch rescue operations owing to the obstruction of roads due to landslides and incessant rains," added the minister.
