"Ahsoka" Season 2 is set to premiere on January 20, 2027, exclusively on Disney+. Lucasfilm announced the release date and revealed the first teaser trailer at the D23 fan event. The new season will arrive nearly three and a half years after the end of Season 1.
The biggest threat this time is Grand Admiral Thrawn, played by Lars Mikkelsen. After returning to the main galaxy, Thrawn plans to unite the Imperial Remnant and launch a major war against the Rebel Alliance and the New Republic. His return is expected to create political and military chaos across the galaxy.
Meanwhile, Ahsoka Tano, played by Rosario Dawson, and Sabine Wren, played by Natasha Liu Bordizzo, are still stranded on the distant planet Peridea. The two must survive its dangerous environment while searching for a way home. Sabine's journey will continue as she struggles with her responsibilities as Ahsoka's Mandalorian apprentice.
Ezra Bridger, played by Eman Esfandi, has made it back to the main galaxy. However, he now faces the consequences of Thrawn's invasion while trying to find a way to rescue Ahsoka and Sabine. Hera Syndulla, played by Mary Elizabeth Winstead, will also have a larger role in the action as she deals with the growing threat to the New Republic.
One of the most exciting parts of the season will be the return of Anakin Skywalker, played by Hayden Christensen. The teaser shows Anakin guiding Ahsoka through the Force and appearing in flashbacks from her younger years. Young Ahsoka, played by Ariana Greenblatt, returns in new Clone Wars-era scenes. Anakin challenges her with the question, “Are you a Jedi… or not?”
The season will also introduce a major change behind the scenes. Rory McCann, best known as the Hound in "Game of Thrones", will take over the role of Baylan Skoll following the death of actor Ray Stevenson in 2023. Baylan's story will continue as he investigates the mysterious power connected to the ancient Mortis gods.
Other returning characters include Shin Hati, Huyang, Mon Mothma, and Ryder Azadi. With Thrawn's war beginning, "Ahsoka" Season 2 promises a larger conflict, deeper character journeys, and more connections to the wider "Star Wars" story.
For fans wondering why the three-and-a-half-year gap between the two seasons, it's mainly due to three factors. First, the 2023 Hollywood strikes caused major delays across the entertainment industry. The 148-day Writers Guild of America strike and 118-day SAG-AFTRA actors’ strike halted production. Since Season 1 ended around the time the strikes were concluding, Dave Filoni reportedly could not begin work on Season 2 until late 2023.
Second, Filoni took on a larger role at Lucasfilm, becoming Chief Creative Officer in November 2023. Alongside developing "Ahsoka", he now helps shape the wider "Star Wars" universe, adding to his workload.
Finally, Lucasfilm is said to be preparing a major "Star Wars" movie directed by Filoni. The film will connect stories from "The Mandalorian", "Ahsoka", "Star Wars: Skeleton Crew", and "The Book of Boba Fett". Season 2 is expected to help set up this movie, requiring careful planning, script coordination, and extensive visual effects work.
