J&K: Militants attack checkpoint in Srinagar, 2 cops killed

Two policemen were killed on Friday when militants attacked a police checkpoint at Nowgam in Srinagar.

The attack happened amid a high alert in Kashmir on the eve of the Independence Day celebrations.

According to police sources, militants fired at the policemen at the checkpoint, injuring three policemen. They were moved to the hospital, but two succumbed to their injuries on the way.

Kashmir Police confirmed the death of two policemen in a tweet.

The area has been cordoned off, and a search operation has been launched.

The attack happened a day before the Independence Day celebrations in Kashmir.

The government has made arrangements for the celebration of Independence Day on Saturday amid high security across Kashmir.

Lieutenant-Governor Manoj Sinha will unfurl the national flag at the main function in Srinagar while the divisional commissioner of Jammu will be the chief guest in Jammu region.

The government has asked the government employees to attend the Independence Day functions in both Srinagar and Jammu.
