The Jammu and Kashmir Police on Saturday detained around 200 suspected over-ground workers (OGWs) of terror outfits as part of a massive crackdown in the Valley.
The J&K Police were supported by other security forces as they launched the operation against the OGW network in many areas of the Kashmir Valley. Several locations in and around Srinagar city were included in the raids, news agency PTI quoted the officials as saying.
During these raids, around 200 suspected OGWs have been detained, the report added. According to security agencies, OGWs provide logistical support such as cash, shelter and other infrastructure to terrorists.
The crackdown is a part of a sustained campaign to dismantle the terror network across the Valley, the officials added.
Earlier, security forces arrested an alleged terrorist associated with the Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) in Pulwama district and recovered a grenade from his possession.
Jammu and Kashmir Police in Awantipora, along with security forces, arrested a terror associate—identified as Musaib Nazir—involved in supporting terrorist activities, a police spokesman said.
Acting on a credible input about the movement of a suspect at Naner Midoora area, security forces launched a search operation in the area, the spokesman said.
During the search, Nazir, a resident of Ladhoo Khrew area in south Kashmir's Pulwama district, allegedly associated with JeM, was apprehended and a grenade was recovered from his possession, the spokesman added.
The police department had constituted 97 new groups of village defence guards (VDGs) with 1,164 new members in Reasi district. An additional 1,902 members have been engaged across existing VDG groups to further strengthen village-level security.
