After mistrusting a video on TikTok, two families in Alkali village in Andhra Pradesh made juices out of seeds of Datura Stramonium, a locally available weed with toxic properties, and drank it.
They drank it as a precaution against contractors in the coronavirus.
Ten of them were found in a semiconscious state and were rushed to the hospital by their neighbours. They have been discharged after being treated appropriately, the police said.
Local health officials have said that there is no vaccine or preventive drug for COVID-19 as of yet, and appealed to people from following unscientific remedies shown on social media platforms in a bid to combat the deadly virus.
The total number of coronavirus infected in Andhra Pradesh is 329. 15 new cases were reported last night. There are similar such ‘home remedies’ circulating on social media, that claim to prevent the coronavirus.

In the last week of March, a Facebook user posted that boiling orange peel along with sea salt and inhaling the steam for 15 minutes will ‘prevent the virus from entering your body’.
There were a lot of comments on the users profile, criticising the claim.
As per a Hindustan Times report, there are rumours circulating on social media that arrack could be an antidote to COVID-19.
A WHO report, however, says that alcohol can neither prevent nor kill the virus once it enters a body.
