As the total number of COVID-19 cases in Delhi jumped to 503, with 58 new cases reported today, a worrisome factor emerging is that of the rise in cases—71 now—where the source of infection is not known yet.

The spurt in the number of cases in Delhi has been mainly due to the Tablighi Jamaat event in Nizamuddin, with 320 of them testing positive so far. As many as 19 of them tested positive since yesterday. Three of the new cases have foreign travel history, and 11 have history of contact with an infected person.

However, 25 new cases have emerged since yesterday where the source of infection is not yet known. The cumulative total of such cases, which according to the health bulletin released by the Delhi government are under investigation, now stands at 71.

This number has constantly been rising, with 18 such cases reported as on March 31. On April 2, there were 25 such cases, which went up to 46 on April 4.

However, the Delhi government maintains that the disease is still in the local transmission phase in the national capital, which means that the source of infection is known. It insists that COVID-19 has not entered the dreaded community transmission phase in the city so far.

So far, seven deaths have been reported in Delhi, and one death was reported since yesterday.

With results of 667 samples tested in Delhi pending, a further spike in cases in the capital can be expected in the coming days.

As many as 3,312 persons have been placed under institutional quarantine at the 19 quarantine centres in Delhi. A total of 22,850 people, who were contacts of infected persons, were placed under home quarantine, of whom 18,593 continue to be under quarantine. As many as 22,766 people who had travel history were placed under quarantine, and 1,358 of them are still under quarantine.
