The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) on Wednesday postponed Class 10 and Class 12 examinations in view of the novel coronavirus pandemic. The board decision came soon after the HRD Ministry directed all educational institutions in the country to put off all the ongoing examinations.

"All ongoing CBSE examinations in India and abroad postponed till March 31 and will be rescheduled thereafter... after an assessment of the situation," CBSE Secretary Anurag Tripathi said.

The board has also suspended all the ongoing evaluation work.

The HRD ministry on Wednesday issued a circular directing all educational institutions to postpone the exams to control the spread of the deadly virus which has so far infected over 150 people in the country.

"While maintenance of academic calendar and exam schedule is important, equally important is safety and security of students who are appearing in various examinations as also of their teachers and parents," HRD secretary Amit Khare said in an official communication.

A number of universities and higher education institutions in the country have already announced postponement of examinations.

Earlier in the day, the CBSE had directed the board examination centres to ensure sitting arrangement with adequate distance between students to contain the coronavirus spread.

With most of the schools and colleges shut down, the ministry has announced that it will launch e-classes on Swayam Prabha DTH channels for school students.
