Plunging Madhya Pradesh into political turnmoil, Congress leader and four-time Parliamentarian Jyotiraditya Scindia resigned from the party earlier on Tuesday. Shortly after, 19 MLAs loyal to Scindia also tendered their resignations.
The Congress, which had won 114 seats in the Madhya Pradesh Assembly elections in 2018, had formed the government with the support of four independent MLAs and two Bahunjan Samajwadi Party MLAs, taking their tally to 120, four over the 116 majority mark. However, the latest developments would leave the MP Congress in a dire situation the Congress will lose its majority in the MP Assembly if the resignations of the MLAs who quit are accepted.

Scindia, a former four-time MP from Guna, is said to have met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi. Sources have said that Scindia may join the Bharatiya Janata Party later on Tuesday. BJP leaders have called a meeting in Bhopal, the capital city of Madhya Pradesh, for a show of strength, and it is likely that Scindia will join the party here.
