The five-member Supreme Court bench hearing the Ayodhya title dispute case on Friday granted an extension to the three-member panel it had appointed for mediating between the parties to the dispute. The mediation panel has been given time till August 15.

The three-member panel—led by former chief justice F.M.I. Kalifulla and consisting of spiritual guru Sri Sri Ravi Shankar and senior advocate Sriram Panchu—was constituted on March 8.

The panel had requested the five-member bench, headed by Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi, for more time. The Supreme Court bench also consists of Justices S.A. Bobde, D.Y. Chandrachud, Ashok Bhushan and Abdul Nazeer.

The panel had submitted an interim report on its work to the Supreme Court bench. However, Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi said the progress made by the mediation panel would “remain confidential” at this stage.
