An American tourist, on an adventure trip, has allegedly been killed by Sentinelese tribesmen at North Sentinel Island of Andamans. The deceased, identified as 27-year-old John Allen Chau, with the help of local fishermen, had gone to the island five days back to interact with Sentinelese tribes. He was killed by the hostile tribe of Sentinel Islands, reported Port Blair news website Andaman Sheekha citing unconfirmed sources.

The report said that a case of murder has been registered against unknown tribal members of Sentinelese community. Sentinelese, the indigenous tribes of the island, have been known to be hostile towards any approach of contact by the outside world. Chau's body was spotted by some fishermen near the North Sentinel Island.

Seven people have been arrested in connection with the murder of Chau for illegally facilitating his visit to the island. The arrested fishermen have been booked under Protection of Aboriginal Tribes act and various other sections of IPC. Meanwhile, police and administration are making efforts to recover the body of the deceased man.

Chau had visited Andaman and Nicobar Islands five times in the past, the report cited sources as saying. This time, he was in the island with a strong desire to meet members of Sentinelese tribe and preach Christianity to them.

On November 16, Chau, with the help of some fishermen reached closed to the island, from where he travelled in his own canoe. The tribe attacked him with bow and arrow before dragging him to the beach, after which the fishermen lost sight of him.

Reportedly, a failed attempt was made on November 14 also.

"We are aware of reports concerning a US citizen in the Andaman and Nicobar islands," a spokeswoman for the United States consulate in Chennai said in an email to news agency Reuters. "When a US citizen is missing, we work closely with local authorities as they carry out their search efforts," she added.
