A portion of an under construction flyover near the railway station in Varanasi collapsed on Tuesday and several people were feared buried under it, police said.
According to media reports, as many as 12 people are feared dead in the incident.
The incident occurred post-noon, officials said adding rescue teams were rushed to the spot.
Senior police and administration officers also reached the site of the incident.
"It is feared that several people are buried under the rubble," an official said.
Some vehicles were also crushed in the incident, they added.
“I was at a distance of 50 metres from the flyover when it collapsed, trapping people under it. 4 four-wheelers, an auto-rickshaw and a minibus were crushed by it. The help came after an hour, an eyewitness said, reports ANI.
“Extremely saddened by the loss of lives due to the collapse of an under-construction flyover in Varanasi. I pray that the injured recover soon. Spoke to officials and asked them to ensure all possible support to those affected,” tweeted PM Modi.
