Director Paul Greengrass' violent historical epic "The Uprising", starring Andrew Garfield, will be released in the US (by Focus Features) and Indian theatres (by PVR) on September 11, 2026. Written and directed by Greengrass ("Captain Phillips", "The Bourne Ultimatum"), the film is a visceral retelling of England’s defining Peasants' Revolt of 1381. Set in the grim aftermath of the Black Plague, the story picks up as the 14-year-old King Richard II levies brutal taxes on ordinary subjects to fund the Hundred Years' War.
Garfield plays Ploughman (representing the legendary real-life rebel leader Wat Tyler). After mourning the devastating loss of his family to the plague, his character is pushed to a breaking point by the crown's exploitation. He evolves from a humble, grieving farmer into a fierce revolutionary, mobilising an army of over 10,000 commoners to march on London and demand socio-economic reform.
Jason Blum's Blumhouse Productions is bankrolling the film, featuring a massive British and international ensemble cast. Aside from Garfield, "The Uprising" stars: Woody Norman as the teenage monarch, King Richard II, Jamie Bell as fellow historical rebel leader John Ball, Cosmo Jarvis as Wat Tyler (acting alongside Garfield's composite farmer protagonist), and Katherine Waterston as Joan of Kent. The supporting cast members include Thomasin McKenzie, Jonny Lee Miller, Tom Hollander, and Stephen Dillane.
The project originally went through several iterations — briefly known as 'The Rage' with Matthew McConaughey attached to star — before being completely retooled under Focus Features with Garfield coming on board in late 2025.
