One of Netflix's most-watched movies, "War Machine", found a solid fanbase with those who grew up on a steady diet of James Cameron movies and any 1980s/90s tech-driven action blockbusters such as "The Terminator", "Terminator 2", "Predator", "Aliens", and "Robocop". Starring Alan Ritchson, "War Machine" put a fresh spin on a familiar concept, delivering a muscular, high-octane action experience. A sequel plan was already hinted at in the climax, and Netflix has now officially announced the title, "War Machines", a possible nod to Cameron's 1986 sequel to Ridley Scott's 1979 horror classic "Alien".
While the first "War Machine" featured a small unit surviving a localised fight against a singular alien robot, the sequel is expected to expand into a wider-scale conflict and "Operation Global Shield". Director Patrick Hughes and co-writer James Beaufort are both returning to script and helm the film. Ritchson is expected to reprise his role as Sergeant "81". Interestingly, a multi-film roadmap has been reportedly envisioned for the universe.
"War Machine" registered a staggering 146.9 million views (translating to 266.8 million hours viewed) when it premiered on Netflix during the first half of 2026, solidifying it as Netflix's #1 most-watched movie of 2026 so far and earning it the #9 spot on Netflix's Top 10 Most-Watched Films of All Time list.
Meanwhile, Ritchson will be seen next in Season 4 of Prime Video's action thriller series "Reacher", which lands on August 12. His other upcoming projects include "Motor City", "Runner", "Playdate", and "The Man With The Bag" (with Arnold Schwarzenegger). He will also make a cameo appearance in the "Reacher" spin-off "Neagley", premiering on September 16, 2026.
