Actor-turned-politician Kamal Haasan, on Tuesday, spoke out against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, calling it a 'slap on democracy'. He also condemned the violence against students at Jamia Millia. He slammed the AIADMK for supporting the CAA, and said it was a betrayal of the people of Tamil Nadu. “This is diverting the attention from farmer suicides,” he said at a press conference.

On being asked about police action at Jamia Millia Islamia and AMU, Haasan said: “The young will have to be politically aware. They must ask questions. If their questions are stifled, then democracy is in danger. I am a student (in my field) I will continue to voice for them.” He said that CAA is a national issue, beyond party and state.

Haasan's party, Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM), had also released a statement saying the party general secretary AG Mourya has filed a petition in Supreme Court challenging the contentious CAA that has sparked massive protests across the country.

Haasan's open stand comes in stark contrast to his peer Rajinikanth's silence on the issue. Rajinikanth, who also took the political plunge, refused to comment on the issue. When asked about the Jamia protests during the audio launch of his next film Darbar in Mumbai on Monday, Rajinikanth averted the question and said that 'this wasn't the right platform' to talk about it
