The trailer for the next season of the Netflix web series Sacred Games reads like an ode to season one’s habit of starting each episode with a flashback. An array of flashing images moves across the screen, taking the viewer through a parade of the Ganesh Gaithonde story of season 1. The trailer begins when Bunty receives a phone call from the god-like don Ganesh Gaithonde (played by Nawazuddin Siddiqui), who is looking for revenge.
With only 14 days left for the city’s decimation, the trailer picks from where it left in the end of season 1. Sartaj Singh (Saif Ali Khan) and his team of cops can be seen ransacking the city looking for any way they can prevent the doom that is scheduled to arrive in 11 days. Gaithonde in his ever-so-flamboyant style, speaks through the trailer just as in the season 1, where he narrated the whole game from the “grave”. The cops can be seen analysing a parchment which says “It’s time for war” followed by asking ”Like Hiroshima and Nagasaki?” — hinting at the nuclear-scale blast planned by Gaithonde at the end of the 25 days.

The story, similar to that of season 1, happens in two timelines. Many known characters from the season 1 makes a comeback. In addition to that, Kalki Koechlin and Ranvir Shorey joins the cast this season in the roles of Batya Abelman and Shahid Khan respectively. Gaithonde can be seen in an array of different roles throughout the trailer. Also the “third father”, of Gaithonde, the Guruji, can be seen gathering an important role in the events that is going to unfold in the coming days.

The season 1 ending leaves the viewers in a soft spot, with more questions than answers. Fan theories abound with suggestions about the return of Ganesh Gaithonde, as many believe there is a dark veil surrounding his death as he had already pulled off a fake one in front of Sartaj. The death of Trivedi is also not confirmed as there are suggestions of him being heavily sedated. The presence of a Geiger counter besides his body (as well as a gas mask, packaged food and water) and the title credits showing a nuclear explosion gives the suggestion of a nuclear blast as the method for destruction of the city. Also Gaithonde states that at the end of the 25 days, everyone will die except Trivedi, which points to the survival of the character from impending doom. The viewers might also get to see the connection between Gaithonde, Guruji, Malcom, Zoya, Bhosle, Trivedi and Parulkar.
With the similar visual play and narrative style of season 1, season 2 gives the impression of bringing all that was good in the first season and taking it to the next stage. There is an increased urgency to the events and talks as it moves through the public and private lives of the characters. Season 2 of Sacred Games will release on Netflix on August 15.
