Swedish aerospace and defence company, Saab, has showcased the capabilities of its RBS-15 missile to destroy the componenets Russian S-400 system.
RBS15 is a highly optimised anti-ship missile with land attack capability, designed to give the forces an edge in increasingly complex conflict scenarios.
While this is not a new missile, as the Swedish defence ministry had ordered RBS-15 Mk4 Gungnir in 2017, a promotional video released by Saab showcases the types of adversaries the weapon system can counter.
According to Saab, "RBS15 Gungnir, utilising the RBS15 Mk4 anti-ship missile, is the next generation of the family. More than just an anti-ship missile, Gungnir can integrate with aircraft, ships and trucks to provide a complete system solution."
The promotional video showcased the versatility of RBS15 as two missiles are fired from a Visby-class corvette, two from a ground-based launcher, and two from a JAS 39 Gripen fighter jet.
According to media reports, two missile destroyers and various components of an air defense system were targeted using the missile. The Gripen-launched missile destroyed the target, which could be clearly identified as a Russian 91N6 surveillance and tracking radar—the backbone of the S-400 'Triumf'. The 91N6 is a 3D radar that is part of the S-400 system, offering 360-degree coverage with a claimed detection range of up to 600 km.
In addition, one of the launchers from a Russian surface-to-air missile system is also destroyed.
The naval target, meanwhile, was the Chinese Type 052D destroyers.
The demo video by Saab highlights RBS-15's evolution since 1984, positioning the missile against advanced threats like S-400, relevant for NATO and littoral operations.
