Subiya Barmar, the lone survivor and sister of a man who allegedly killed 14 members of his family in Thane, has given a chilling account of her ordeal to the police.
Subiya said she saw her brother approach her with a "blood-soaked butcher's knife", telling her that he has killed all members of their family and now it was her turn to be killed.
However, as Hasnain came close to his sister, Subiya pushed him out of the door, but not before getting slashed her on the neck and fingers, police said.
Subiya said all the slain members of the family gathered at her house in Kasarvadawali on Saturday to enjoy 'dawat' (feast) arranged by her brother. She said Hasnain went on the killing spree when everyone was asleep, at around 2 am in the morning.
Police said he had sedated them with drinks laced with drugs, before slitting their throats one by one. His victims included seven children besides his parents and wife.
Subiya said at around 3am, she woke up because of some sound and in the dim light, saw her brother slit throats of family members one by one, before turning towards her.
After rescuing herself from Hasnain, Subiya said she locked herself in a room and screamed, which was heard by neighbours who later took her to a hospital, where she is still convalescing.
"I learned about my brother's suicide in the hospital," she told the police.
Meanwhile, a close relative of the family, Liyakat Dhole, told PTI that the Warekars were a highly respected family among the 42 villages of Kokani Muslims in Thane.
"One thing I can say is that it was Allah's wish that she stayed alive to tell everyone the story...that's why the shaitan (devil) let her go," he said.
Joint Commissioner of Police Ashutosh Dumbare has said the police were looking into all possible angles, such as a property dispute or psychological disorder, to figure out what led to this mass killing.
Police have also learned from neighbours that Hasnain used to slaughter goats for 'kurbani' (sacrifice) ritual and therefore knew how to use a butcher's knife.
Hasnain, a commerce graduate, used to prepare income-tax-related documents for a chartered accountancy firm in Navi Mumbai and did not have any permanent job, police said.
