The Ministry of Human Resource Development on Thursday announced over 100 per cent hike in annual fee for undergraduate courses in Indian Institute of Technology, according to reports.

Annual fee for undergraduate courses in IITs to be hiked from Rs 90,000 to Rs 2 lakh from upcoming academic session, the HRD Ministry officials said , according to PTI.

The new fee structure is a result of a proposal by IIT panel which recommended a three-fold fee hike, from Rs 90,000 to Rs 3 lakh per annum and sent it to HRD ministry for the approval.

The new announcement comes just in the wake of reports of HRD Minister Smriti Irani's announcement to waive off tuition fees of IIT students, who are from schedule cast, schedule tribes and differently-abled categories. Meanwhile, she also reportedly said that students who belong to families whose annual income is below Rs 5 lakh will be eligible for a 66 per cent concession in tuition fees.

However, Irani is yet to make an official announcement on the new benefits for the IIT students.
