India has cracked down on controversial televangelist Zakir Naik, revoking passport days ahead of his scheduled conference in Malaysia.

Based in Saudi Arabia, where he found refuge after controversy over his alleged role in instigating IS operatives, Naik has been evading Indian investigating agencies.

Terror suspects arrested in various IS-related cases in India had also claimed that Naik's sermons inspired them to carry out terror activities.

Official sources said the NIA had thrice issues notices to Naik, asking him to cooperate with the investigation.

On April 21, the NIA special court in Mumbai had issued a non-bailable warrant against Naik. On June 15, the court issued a proclamation under CrPC section 82, mandating the appearance of Zakir Naik.

"Afterwards, the NIA requested the ministry of external affairs to revoke his passport," an official said.

Sources said the NIA swung into action after it received inputs that Naik was about to travel to Malaysia, where he was a guest speaker amongst a gathering of Muslim scholars.

The NIA, as well as the enforcement directorate, have registered cases against Naik and attached the assets of his Islamic Research Organisation, which has been banned by the government.
