Itanagar, Nov 3 (PTI): Arunachal Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein flagged off a cycling expedition from Namsai to Namti to commemorate the courage and sacrifice of Indian soldiers during the 1962 Battle of Walong.

The expedition, organised by the DAO Division of the Indian Army, aims to honour the soldiers who laid down their lives defending the country during the Sino-Indian War and highlight the enduring bond between the Army and the people of the state.

Taking to X after flagging off the expedition, Mein said the Battle of Walong was a significant chapter in India's military history, reflecting the courage, resilience and determination of Indian troops who defended the country's eastern frontier against Chinese forces.

He also recalled the contribution of local people in supporting the Indian Army during the 1962 conflict and paid tribute to those who lost their lives in the war.

The expedition will culminate at Namti, a historically significant battlefield located about seven km from Walong in Anjaw district.

The area witnessed fierce fighting during the 1962 war and houses a memorial honouring the soldiers who made the supreme sacrifice.

Describing the initiative as more than an adventure sporting event, Mein said it would promote patriotism, national unity and endurance while strengthening relations between the Army and civilian communities.

He praised the Indian Army, particularly the DAO Division, and the organisers for undertaking the initiative, saying such programmes would inspire young people, promote adventure tourism and strengthen civil-military cooperation.

Mein wished the participants a safe and successful expedition and said the legacy of the Battle of Walong would continue to inspire generations to serve the nation.

The cycling expedition is taking place amid the 64th Walong Day commemorative events, scheduled across the region from October 27 to November 16, according to the Anjaw district administration.
