New Delhi, Aug 25 (PTI) A 40-year-old mechanic died after slipping on a rain-soaked road and coming into contact with a live electric pole in west Delhi's Kirti Nagar, police said on Monday.
The incident was reported around 9.40 pm on Sunday when a caller informed police about an electrocution near the Kesar T-Point, they said.
During inquiry, it was found that the victim, Pawan Yadav, was passing through the area when he lost his balance on a muddy patch on the road due to rain.
As he fell, his hand touched an electric pole, resulting in him receiving a severe electric shock, a senior police officer said.
Yadav was rushed to the ABG Hospital in an unconscious condition, where doctors declared him dead, the officer added.
The body has been preserved for post-mortem, and the family has been informed, police said, adding that further action will be taken based on the autopsy report and inquiry findings.
According to police, Yadav worked as a two-wheeler mechanic and lived with his family in Basaidarapur.
Locals alleged that they had repeatedly complained to the authorities about the electric pole carrying live current but no action was taken.
Satish, an eyewitness and a colleague of the deceased, told PTI, "Yadav was returning home after work when he slipped and accidentally touched an electric pole. We had complained about the open wire earlier but nothing was fixed."
"He remained stuck to the pole for a few minutes before we managed to pull him away... This pole had current before as well for which we avoided going near it. It's sheer negligence that such poles are not checked," he added.
Raj, a local who also witnessed the incident, alleged that despite repeated complaints, the authorities took no steps to resolve the issue.
"This is gross negligence by the authorities. Only after a man died did they cut off power supply to the pole," he claimed.
While some claimed that the pole belonged to Tata Power, a spokesperson for Tata Power DDL said, "In response to the unfortunate electrocution incident at Kirti Nagar, a dedicated team from Tata Power-DDL visited the site to assess the situation and take necessary actions."
He added that upon investigation, it was confirmed that the pole involved is an iron streetlight pole which is not maintained by Tata Power-DDL.
"We remain committed to ensuring the highest safety standards across our distribution network," the spokesperson said.
