DONALD TRUMP RALLY SHOOTING LATEST UPDATES: Here is an interactive that takes a look at some of the assassinations and attempts that have occurred since the founding of the United States of America in 1776:

If you think Donald Trump was the first United States Presidential hopeful to face an assassination attempt, you got it wrong. Many others have survived attempts to take their lives during the run to enter the White House. Yet others were not so lucky and lost their lives to violence.

Over the years, many US Presidents and presidential candidates have faced attempts to claim their lives. Here is a timeline of such attempts dating back to the demise of Abraham Lincoln, whose feelings for the rights of Black Americans, cost him dearly.  To name a few episodes of political violence targeting US Presidents:

  • JOHN F KENNEDY:

Kennedy was fatally shot by a hidden assassin as he visited Dallas with first lady Jacqueline Kennedy. Shots rang out as the president’s motorcade rolled through Dealey Plaza in downtown Dallas.

  • ROBERT F KENNEDY:

John's borther Robert was seeking the Democratic presidential nomination when he was killed at a Los Angeles hotel — moments after giving his victory speech for winning the 1968 California primary.

  • President Gerald Ford faced two assassination attempts within weeks in 1975 and was not hurt in either incident.
  • President Ronald Reagan was leaving a speech in Washington, DC, and walking to his motorcade when he was shot by John Hinckley Jr.
  • GEORGE BUSH:

Bush was attending a rally in Tbilisi in 2005 with Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili when a hand grenade was thrown toward him. The grenade did not explode, and no one was hurt.
