Turkish interior ministry stated that an explosion near the country's parliament in Ankara on Sunday was a “terrorist attack”. Authorities did not identify any specific militant group.
The attack happened hours before the parliament was scheduled to reopen following a summer recess. All parliamentarians, including Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, were expected to attend the session at 2pm (4.30pm IST), according to Al Jazeera.
“Two terrorists arrived in a light military vehicle at around 9.30 am (12pm IST), in front of the entrance gate of the General Directorate of Security of our Ministry of the Interior, and carried out a bomb attack,” the ministry stated.
One of the men blew himself up while the other was killed in a shootout by the police.
Ali Yerlikaya, the minister, said on social media platform X that two police officers were slightly injured in the incident. "Our struggle will continue until the last terrorist is neutralised," Yerlikaya wrote.
In November 2022, six people were killed and 81 wounded in an explosion in central Istanbul.
