Myanmar court on Friday convicted ousted leader Aung San Suu Kyi on corruption charges, sentencing her to seven years in prison.

The court's action leaves her with a total of 33 years to serve in prison following a series of politically tinged prosecutions since the army toppled her elected government in February 2021, reported AP.

According to reports, Suu Kyi's lawyers have been banned from speaking to the media.

Earlier on several charges, she was convicted of a total of 26 years imprisonment. With the latest conviction, she is set to serve a total of 33 years in prison.

The UN Security Council called for her release last week. They had called for an end to violence in Myanmar and the release of all political prisoners.

She was sentenced on the last five charges that she faced. She was found guilty by the court on corruption charges because she had not followed regulations in renting a helicopter for a government minister, BBC reported.

The Nobel laureate has spent most of her time in detention under house arrest in Nay Pyi Taw.

Widespread demonstrations prevailed in Myanmar after the military takeover in February.
