Indonesia earthquake death toll rises to 252

31 people are missing and 377 are injured

A powerful earthquake, on Monday, hit Indonesia's main island of Java. The death toll has risen to 252, the local government said in an Instagram post on Tuesday. 
 

As per the post, 31 people are missing and 377 are injured. And the number of people displaced has reached 7,060. 

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday condoled the loss of lives in the earthquake in Indonesia, and said India stands with that country in this hour of grief.

"Saddened by the loss of lives and damage to property from the earthquake in Indonesia," Modi said in a tweet and tagged Indonesian President Joko Widodo.

"Deepest condolences to the victims and their families. Wish a speedy recovery to the injured. India stands with Indonesia in this hour of grief," he said. 

Ridwan Kamil, the governor of West Java, said the majority of the dead were children “So many incidents occurred at several Islamic schools,” he told the Guardian. About 51 educational sites, including 30 elementary schools were affected. Rescue authorities continue to operate, hoping to reach people trapped in the rubble.

BNPB or Indonesia's National Agency for Disaster Countermeasure has reported that over 2,000 homes have been destroyed.
