Pakistani political figures have latched on to the controversy triggered by inflammatory remarks made by two BJP spokespersons on the Prophet Muhammad.

On Sunday evening, Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif tweeted the comments about Prophet Muhammad were “hurtful”. He alleged India under Prime Minister Narendra Modi was “trampling religious freedoms & persecuting Muslims” and demanded the “World should take note & severely reprimand India”.

Sharif declared “All Muslims can sacrifice their life for the Love & Respect of their Holy Prophet...”

Pakistan Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari described the remarks by the BJP officials as “completely repugnant & derogatory...”.

Bilawal tweeted “Totally unacceptable; hurting sentiments of billions of Muslims around the world. Time for intl comm to stop the ‘Hindutva’ inspired Islamophobia in India.”

Shehbaz's predecessor, Imran Khan, tweeted “Modi govt has been deliberately following a policy of provocation & hatred towards Muslims in India including inciting vigilante violence against them.” He called on the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation to “take strong action ag Modi's India bec sadly so far India has been allowed to get away with its Islamophobic policies”.
