One person was killed and another injured in a taxi explosion outside the Women’s Hospital in Liverpool on Sunday.

The Merseyside Police said the taxi had pulled up at the hospital shortly before the explosion. It said one person had been killed while another was being treated in hospital for injuries that were not life-threatening.

A bomb squad was dispatched to the area after reports of a car explosion around 11am (GMT).

"We are keeping an open mind as to what caused the explosion but given how it has happened, out of caution, Counter Terrorism Police are leading the investigation supported by Merseyside Police," they said.

"This has not been declared a terrorist incident at this stage," they said.

The incident coincides with Remembrance Sunday, which commemorates the contributions of British and Commonwealth military and civilian servicemen and women. The second Sunday of November is chosen for the event as it coincides with the date World War I ended.
