In a rather embarrassing turn of events, Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan's office faced power cut over non-payment of bills. According to Islamabad Electric Supply Company, the bill amount of the Secretariat ran up to a few crores.

They had also issued a notice to this effect on Wednesday. The PM's office currently owes IESCO 41 lakh rupees and last month they owed 35 lakh.

Pakistan has been facing more frequent power cuts in recent years. With entire neighbourhoods being bereft of electricity for a large part of summer months has led to major discontent in the country.

“This is a recurrent problem with the Secretariat. We will cut off the power supply if dues are not paid," an IESCO source said.

Pakistan economy it looks like, could be in deep trouble. The annual fiscal deficit has risen to 8.9 per cent, the highest in the last three decades. The government in June 2019 announced that it intends to keep the deficit at 7.1 per cent of GDP, while the target in beginning of the year was 4.9 per cent.

During his election campaign, Khan had promised to improve the economic situation of the country. The prospect of keeping it up, however, seems bleak with deficit amounts at 3.445 trillion rupees, highest since 1979-80.
