An earthquake of 7.3 magnitude struck Indonesia on Monday and the tremors were felt all the way till Darwin in Australia. According to seismologists, no tsunami warning was issued. There haven't been any reports of major damage or casualties.

Some Darwin residents have evacuated, claiming damage to their property.

The quake hit at a depth of 208 kilometres south of Ambon island in the Banda Sea at 11:53 local time, the US Geological Survey said.

As Indonesia is located on the 'Pacific Ring of Fire' where tectonic plates collide, the country experiences frequent seismic and volcanic activity.

Last year, a 7.5-magnitude quake and a subsequent tsunami in Palu on Sulawesi island killed more than 2,200 with a thousand more declared missing.
