Germany's Alexander Zverev came out with a powerful performance as he stunned Swiss maestro Roger Federer in straight sets to win the men's singles title of the Rogers Cup.

The German fourth seed defeated Federer 6-3, 6-4 in a summit clash that lasted 68 minutes at the Centre Court. Zverev had the 36-year-old on his heels from the start of the game and needed just 30 minutes to win the first set.

Federer, 36, however, started to find his groove early in the second set but suddenly appeared out of sorts while the world number eight broke in the seventh game to pull ahead 4-3 and then held on for a surprise win. With the win, Zverev became just the third man to beat the 19-time Grand Slam champion this year. This was the German's fifth title of the year.

In women's singles, Ukraine's Elina Svitolina came out with a stupendous performance as she defeated Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark in straight sets to clinch the title.

Fifth-seeded Svitolina needed just one hour and 17 minutes to defeat Wozniacki 6-4, 6-0 in the summit clash at the Aviva Centre. This was Svitolina's fifth title of the WTA Tour season. She has now become the first player to ever win three Premier 5 titles in a single season—Dubai, Rome and Toronto.

With the win, the 22-year-old from Ukraine improves to number four in the world rankings.

Meanwhile, Indian tennis ace Rohan Bopanna and his Croatian partner Ivan Dodig's dreams of winning their first ATP World Tour Masters 1000 as a team crashed as they lost to French pair of Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Nicolas Mahut in the men's doubles final of the Montreal Masters here.

The seventh-seed Indo-Croatian pair lost to the fifth-seeded French pair 4-6, 6-3, 10-6 in the summit clash that lasted for almost two hours.
