Ashleigh Gardner's Sydney Sixers suffered an embarrassing defeat in their WBBL fixture against Annabel Sutherland's Melbourne Stars at the North Sydney Oval in Sydney on Thursday (November 20). Chasing a revised target of 154 from 10 overs, the Sixers were bowled out for just 42 in 7.4 overs, thereby crashing to a mammoth 111-run defeat (DLS method).

Three of Sixers' top-five batters registered ducks and nobody in the line-up got to double figures as it was a procession from start to finish. It didn't help the home side that the DLS target was an unrealistic one, forcing the batters to have a go every ball. Kim Garth was the standout Stars bowler with figures of 4-3 from her two overs.

Sophia Day and skipper Sutherland also picked up two wickets apiece as the Stars bowlers had a gala time in the short innings. The monstrous win was, however, set up by a high class century from Meg Lanning who smashed 135 off just 74 balls with 22 fours and four sixes. She put up a 159-run opening stand with Rhys McKenna (50 off 34) to give the tourists a rollicking start.

Once the opening stand was broken, the Stars lost a few more wickets in the death overs but Lanning singlehandedly took the Sixers bowling apart with a display of ruthless powerhitting. The veteran registered the third highest individual score in WBBL history and her career best score in the format.

The stars hit 26 boundaries in total, the highest ever in a WBBL innings ever and the total of 219 was also the third highest score in tournament history. The 111-run win for Stars was the second-biggest margin of victory by runs ever, only behind Adelaide Strikers' 148-run win against the Stars themselves back in 2023.
